Sam is a kindergartener eagerly awaiting his birthday, especially the cupcakes – with sprinkles, of course! When the coronavirus comes to his community, school closes and neighbors stay apart, disrupting Sam’s family and routine. Despite the challenges, Sam’s parents want to make it a special day for him. But will they remember the most important thing?

This sweet and poignant story is ideal for kids ages 4-8, along with their parents, grandparents, caregivers, and educators. All proceeds from the book will benefit vulnerable families affected by the COVID pandemic in the greater Washington DC area. Story by Sarah D. Beller, Illustrations by Max S. This sensitive story handles a tough subject honestly, while leaving room for lots of love and joy. Kids will be comforted to see their strange or scary experiences in this book. Grown-ups will be glued too.

This is the book that parents of young kids need right now.

This touching and timely story struck a chord with me. I love how it shows a child’s disappointment about the school situation, paired with his hopeful spirit of resilience. I truly recommend this book for parents and caregivers to read to their school-age children.
— Kelsey Visser, Parent and Educator
This is a really good story. I liked how it is not always serious, and the people in the story can be funny!
— Zoe, Age 8
You should read this story. I liked the chocolate smile and how Sam changed his mind.
— Maya, Age 5
