When I was feeling angsty in my first job out of college running literacy programs, I wrote a song.
While procrastinating on applications to grad school to study conflict resolution, I wrote a song.
After meeting members of the Greensboro truth and reconciliation commission, I wrote a song.
When I was feeling utterly overwhelmed organizing the resistance, I wrote a song.
As our holy rage burned because families were being separated at the border, I wrote a song.
When my heart was bursting with love and wonder, I wrote a song.
Over the past 15 years, while working by day (and night) toward social change, I've been writing songs.
And now there are enough for an album!!
My original songs speak to themes like:
rising up for truth, reconciliation, and justice in an imperfect world
cultivating self-compassion and emotional awareness
avoiding burnout and drawing on a deep well of resilience
acknowledging human foibles like procrastination with humor
finding empowerment as a woman growing up in a patriarchal society
teaching the next generation to cherish and protect the natural world
You can hear some of them on Soundcloud and YouTube — and watch my live house concert here! The style is folky and lyric-base, influenced by years of listening to Dar Williams and Tracy Chapman.
Living in a broken world, there's so much work to be done. But we can't do the work if we're not nourished and fired up along the way.
